It may surprise you to know that you can treat most gum disease on your own. If you suspect you are in the beginning stages of gum disease, you don’t have to wait to start treating it. All you have to know is the basic principles of good oral health and apply them to your own routine.

Treating Gum Disease on Your Own

You have to ask yourself a few questions and really answer them honestly. A lot of people tell white lies to the dentist when they inquire about their oral hygiene. Some say they brush more than they actually do and floss more than they actually do. They don’t want to be embarrassed in front of the dentist, so they bend the truth. You have to be honest with yourself and the dentist, however, if you hope to treat gum disease.

The first question you should ask is how many times you brush your teeth a day? Most dental professionals recommend that you brush at least two times a day and after meals and snacks. The majority of people only brush once in the morning and once at night. That is the absolute minimum amount of brushing required. If you are experiencing the signs of gum disease, you should try to brush more frequently especially after meals.

You also have to be honest about flossing. It seems like no one flosses as much as they should, so don’t feel badly if you could use an improvement. Try to incorporate flossing into either your morning or evening routine. You should also add an antibacterial mouthwash to your routine to kill the harmful bacteria in plaque.
