Oral Care

There are two types of oral care you should know about. There is professional oral care, and personal oral care. Both are equally necessary to maintain a healthy mouth and an attractive smile.

Professional and Personal Oral Care

In terms of professional care, everyone should visit the dentist at least once a year. Most dentists recommend a visit every six months. These visits are important because a professional cleaning will remove plaque and tartar that simply cannot be removed in any other way. Tartar is too hard for the average person to remove at home. Dentists and hygienists have special tools that allow them to remove tartar and plaque from beneath the gum line and in between teeth. These cleanings are essential for maintaining the health of teeth and gums. Moreover, getting a check up yearly is also important because a dentist can identify and correct tooth decay. If cavities are left untreated, they can lead to tooth loss.

While professional care is an essential part of oral care, it is no more important than personal oral care. In between visits it is crucial for you to keep your teeth and mouth as clean as possible. The means, you need to limit your gum's exposure to bacteria that cause gum disease. These bacteria live in plaque that accumulates on your teeth and tongue every day. Keeping your mouth clean means brushing, and flossing to remove this plaque as often as possible.

Practicing both good personal care and seeking out professional care often will lead to a healthy mouth. Neither one is more important than the other. If you follow the recommended guidelines for both you will be rewarded with a beautiful and pain-free smile.
